Quetzal Mama Scholars Program

The Quetzal Mama Scholars Program launched as a pilot program in 2014.

In 2019, the program is in its 6th year (and final cohort).

Students are interviewed and selected from the following North San Diego public and charter school districts:

San Marcos Unified, Carlsbad Unified, Vista Unified, Oceanside Unified, Fallbrook Unified, and the Charter Districts of Guajome Academy and High Tech High North County.

Scholars complete the program with the following program deliverables: (1) Specialized knowledge to navigate the selective college admissions process; (2) Tailored list of 12 Colleges aligned with their academic profile; (3) ACT and/or SAT Preparation; (4) Financial Aid guidance by local expert; (5) Questbridge Application & Essay Assistance; (6) Personal Statement coaching for the University of California and Common Application; (8) Tailored Letters of Recommendation; and (9) interview skills for college, scholarships, internships, and leadership program interviews.

Key Highlight

A key highlight of the Quetzal Mama Scholars Program was the donation of an SAT preparation program by Veritas Prep, and a donation of laptops for all of the Scholars by a community of parents and educators.

Cohort Learning Model

The Quetzal Mama Scholars curriculum operates as a co-learning environment. Students belong to a team, working together for 10 months in a collaborative and supportive environment.
